My husband and I can no longer spell in front of our children to try to keep a secret. I thought we'd have another year or so. Sigh.
We were all sitting around the table eating supper when I started thinking that we should think about getting our oldest son (5 yrs old) a watch. So I spelled it out. We continued discussing it when all of a sudden my son says, "watch." ARE YOU KIDDING ME????? My 5 year old can already understand what we're spelling.
Don't get me wrong, I'm very proud of him...spelling and all. I've been pretty persistent in teaching him letters and spelling, so I have no one to blame but myself, but I just thought it would take longer...that's all.
His teacher thinks he may fit into the gifted category. I was surprised. I knew he was smart...but gifted? She'll need to have him tested to confirm, but I now won't be surprised. You know he's always been a little different from his peers. And she also thinks he has some sensory sensitivities. Not sure what it all means, but he may be spending time in a sensory room of some sort. He's always been easily excitable. He still cries at the drop of a hat when he's frustrated. He's at times been a bit of a challenge to raise and it makes me feel like it may not just be our parenting, but there may be a reason for his odd behaviours. Oh ya, and he's behind on his gross motor skills too. An athlete he is not. Oh I love my son.
In other news...I lost 1.5 inches on my hips this month! Rockin'.
Amanda- find, borrow, or buy a book on Sensory Integration Disorder. It is what my son Aiden is being tested for and it sounds like your kiddo may have the same thing. There are also some really good websites that can explain some stuff to you. I'm in the process of researching it too. Interesting that we might have kids with the same issues.
