Just another morning...

My alarm first started squawking at me at 7am this morning. I immediately hit snooze and hearing only silence coming from the direction of the kids' bedrooms, I drifted back to sleep...for 9 minutes and then sleepily hit the snooze again. My kids are usually all awake and active by 7am, but the time change and a late night last night combined to make some sleepy kids. This went on until about 7:30. As I lied awake in bed listening to Finny babbling happily in her crib, it suddenly dawned on me that Finn had a speech therapy appointment at 9:30 and I couldn't just send Will off to school while still in my pajamas. I had to look decent and be ready to leave the house at 9. My hand reached for my hair, "oh good, I don't need a shower" - THAT was a relief. I jumped out of bed and started the task of getting ready for the day.

The phone rang. I looked at the clock, it was 7:50. I thought it must be Brian, as he'd been working nights and this was usually when he'd be heading home. Looking at the call display, however, I was mistaken. It was Finleigh's speech therapist. She was calling to tell me that it was very cold outside and while she'd made it to work, she would understand if we wanted to reschedule. I looked out the window and realized she was right. It WAS cold out. The smoke was almost resting on the roofs as it left the chimneys of our neighboring houses. The sky was the color of blue that's reserved for only the coldest days and the sun, just peaking above the trees, was almost orange. It was -38 C (about the same in Fahrenheit). These temperatures are usually reserved for December, January and February. Not this year, I guess.

While I thanked her for her offer, I'm a tough northern girl and told her we'd be there, as long as we could find a parking spot close by (which can be tricky). After hanging up the phone, I realized the van wasn't plugged in. Ugh...it doesn't start when it's this cold out. So, after convincing the boys it was time to get out of bed, I popped some Eggo's in the toaster (I know, I know...I took my husband shopping with me, that's all I can say. At least they don't have trans fat anymore. Ironically enough, the syrup I served with them is homemade) and ran outside to plug in the van hoping that a half hour was enough time for the block heater to do its job. The kids and I managed to eat breakfast and be dressed and ready on time and as I saw Will off to school I started the van, which took two tries, but it worked. 15 minutes and 1 cup of coffee later, my younger 2 children and I, all bundled up, hopped into a warm van and headed for her appointment.

We made it with 2 minutes to spare. I'm glad we went. It was a good appointment where we talked strategy on how to approach getting my 2 year old child - who is functioning much more like a 1 year old - to talk. I left with an article to read, some homework and the joy of hearing Finn say a new word and actually repeat one she'd used before - both appropriately.

When we got home, we spent a half hour with Brian before he headed to bed for the day.

I've not accomplished much else today, but I can hear clothes bouncing around in the dryer, so if I don't forget about them and remember to fold them and put them away, I will have done 1 load of laundry today, at least.

Weight loss wise, I've managed to use the treadmill 4 days in a row now. I can't say my eating's been perfect, but it's not been horrible Even with that extra piece of birthday cake I ate last night before bed, my pants are feeling looser.

I like exercise, why did I stop?

  1. heehee - we've switched places!! I've been slowly falling off of the exercise bandwagon over the past 2 weeks. But today I went to WW and the meeting was about exercising more, so I will do it! (dagnabit)
Wait to go for getting out in the cold - it can sure be nasty - and also for getting on the treadmill. I'm proud of you!!
